What is your favorite part of your most recent trip?

Wow! That is a hard question. I loved Prague, Nuremberg, and so many places, but I would love to return to Salzburg. It was so cold and very icy when you got away from the shopping areas, so we were unable to visit what I wanted to explore. There is so much to see in Salzburg, starting with the salt mines, the fortress, the filming location of The Sound of Music and Mirabell Gardens, and then you have many side tours from there through the Bavarian Alps.

Now that is a reason to return to this area, but to answer the question “my favorite part?” would be Regensburg. We walked everywhere, both on a guided tour and then by ourselves. It is easy to get around there; the people are friendly and helpful, and there is a lot of history to discover. The Christmas Market in Regensburg was the nicest and most interesting with lots of arts and crafts.

What sites did you see while traveling?

The most interesting site for me was visiting the Courthouse and Room 600 where the Nuremburg Trials were held. Besides the history you learn in Room 600, one floor up is a museum with numerous photographs and information on the trials as to who was found guilty and who was acquitted. In this area we also found photographs and some information on the Japanese Trials. In Nuremburg, our tour took us to Hitler’s base of operations and that was amazing to hear and see what had transpired there.

Any interesting facts or history you learned?

We learned that the children in school are taught of the atrocities during Hitler’s regime and how that can never happen again. We saw a memorial to the Jews in Regensburg and some school children were there on a field trip.

What company did you travel/ cruise with?

Through Roseborough Travel we booked with AMA Waterways for the December 2016 Christmas Market River Cruise. We look forward to another river cruise with AMA. They are phenomenal!

How did you find that company handled your vacation/ tours/ hotels?

Roseborough Travel in Deland, Florida, the best agency you can use.

Anything you did not like?

We did not like the COLD, especially the FREEZING cold in Budapest! Yes, we knew it would be cold in December in Europe, but this was the WORST! However, I would like to return to Hungary one day in their spring or summer and really enjoy all they have to offer.

Where is the next place you want to explore?

ICELAND, and I’ll be going there in February 2017.

Do You Know the Real Story of Mount Rushmore?

Knowing the “Real”story behind a destination: Mount Rushmore

By Amanda Vallone

Have you ever wondered what the “real story” is behind a destination, piece of art, or monument? If you are like most, you have probably learned about famous sights in history from a book, magazine articles, history lesson, or television show. It is a unique opportunity to put that knowledge to the test when you see the sight in person.

One of the most recognizable monuments in the US is Mount Rushmore- nearly three million people each year travel worldwide to marvel at the majestic beauty of the Black Hills of South Dakota and see the National Monument to four of our nation’s most influential leaders. What may surprise you, is that it was not the original idea of artist Gutzon Borglum to create a monument to the president to the badlands of South Dakota… rather, South Dakota historian Doane Robinson was initially looking to bring tourists to the badlands by celebrating the West. They were to commission an artist to sculpt Western heroes like Oglala Lakota leader Red Cloud, explorers Lewis and Clark, and Buffalo Bill Cody into the nearby stone pinnacles known as the Needles. But the dream of making this tourist attraction large enough to draw people from around the globe needed to be larger than the Needles…. It needed to be carved into the side of a mountain. And so, it was.

Did you know:

* Jefferson was supposed to be on Washington’s Right? But the rock didn’t work out so his face was blasted out and replaced to the left.

* There is a hall of records behind the head of President Lincoln which holds our Nation’s most valuable information and is stored and meant to be opened thousands of years from now to educate our future generations.

* The carving was originally meant to include the bodies of the presidents down to their waists.

* In 1937, a bill was introduced to Congress to add the image of women’s rights leader Susan B. Anthony to the mountain… But then, Congress then passed a bill requiring only the heads that had already been started be completed.

* 400 men worked on Mount Rushmore, only one of whom was hired an artist, the rest were miners who were good with dynamite. Surprisingly, no man died during this project.

* The one artist Borglums did hire Korczak Ziolkowski, to work as an assistant on the mountain. But after 19 days and a heated argument with Borglum, Korczak Ziolkowski left the project. He would later begin another mountain carving nearby, Crazy Horse Memorial, which today is the world’s largest mountain sculpture in progress.

You see, some of the most famous monuments in our nation have a lot of interesting and fun facts behind them. This summer the Aging Tree will take a group departure to Mount Rushmore and get a first hand view of these 60 foot tall carvings in the side of a mountain that draw over 3 million visitors from around the world every year. This guided tour brings you to experience the greatness of Mount Rushmore, sightseeing, dinner, and the spectacular lighting of the memorial at night. You will partake in

a patriotic welcome and salute to our Veterans and the Presidents who were chosen for their significant contribution to the founding, expansion, preservation, and unification of this great country.

Do you want to learn more about Mount Rushmore, or the rest of the destinations on this departure including Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, Devils Tower and Crazy Horse Memorial?

Whirlwind of World Travelers

By Amanda Vallone

WOW WOW WOW! Some of you who read our blog know more about us than others. I am one of the owners of Roseborough Travel Agency and our marketing director. I get the unique opportunity to work in the travel industry and actually get to travel multiple times a year with groups of people worldwide. These clients are rightfully dubbed our #RoseboroughExplorers. Let me tell you, some of the people I have traveled with have had the most interesting, unique, and awe-inspiring experiences- they are true adventurers & explorers.

group

I have business partners, work wives- Cathy Blanchette & Tiffany Clay. Cathy and Tiffany are much more to me than just women I went into business with. They have been there for me in good times and bad. They are family. We are all one family at Roseborough. We work together, laugh together, cry together, fight with each other, and passionately strive for the same goals together (most of the time).

Group 5

Though we all have our own individual family, each of us are a member of one another’s family as well. We also live by the code that our clients and Roseborough Explorer’s are family to us. If you ever get the opportunity to go on a group departure with us you will soon realize what I mean by this.

Example: Three years ago, my husband George and I were going through a medical procedure called IVF in order to start our family. While I was on a group trip through Alaska and the Yukon our Roseborough Explorers noticed every morning I would be up and out of the hotel or off the ship super early and at a medical facility. Then one of them walked in on George giving me an injection of my medicine in my back that I needed to take every day at 7pm – and we happened to be in the middle of a Tundra Wilderness Tour deep in the Denali National Park.

The group automatically became very concerned and started asking many questions. With so many people dealing with horrible conditions and diseases I think they were worried I was sick. So we had to tell them what was going on.

While in Skagway, AK my nurse called me. One of those early morning doctors visits came back to the Orlando based clinic finally. My bloodwork was good. No, it was GREAT! I was pregnant. My trip to Alaska in 2013 my then unborn child instantly gained 21 #RoseboroughExplorer Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins- WE  ARE FAMILY!

yukon2013

Jump ahead- My daughter Aurora (named after the Aurora Borealis  of Alaska) just turned two in April. We celebrated her birth with a party at home and do you know, I had so many of my Explorers reach out to me and wish my lil peanut a happy birthday and recall the day they found out we were having her? It is so touching to me to know she is so loved.

two

So on we go… having a two year old at home is always a tad chaotic and add in a daddy who travels for work and myself who does events. But I wouldn’t trade it for the world!

So where in the world are our explorers going next? Well… Hawaii is our next stop! I cannot wait to cruise the Hawaiian Islands… We are under 60 days away– yippiee!

The next one I am super excited about is  our Iceland trip to see the Aurora Borealis aka Northern Lights in February– which we only have 4 seats left on.

And then onto Africa…

Our Explorers are going everywhere in the world. They are going to Europe for River Cruises, Israel for Holy Land Tours, and out West for the National Parks. It has been a whirlwind of travel experiences… kind of like this blog I suppose. I know I am be-bopping around all sorts of topics here. I guess in the end my point of the article is. Travel the world. Make memories. Experience life NOW while you can. Enjoy the whirlwind of emotions and experiences – TRAVEL! YOLO!
